In November The Circus in Helsinki will host an event like nothing
seen before on the Finnish stages, a battle of the worlds two biggest
Balkan brass bands. The musical fighters are the Romanian Fanfare
Ciocarlia and the Serbian Boban & Marko Markovich. This time the dance
bands that can often only be heard in the static concert halls will
perform their music the way they are supposed to: aiming for the dance
floor.

Fanfare Ciocarlia

Fanfare Ciocarlia is a brass band consisting of twelve Romanian
Romani. They have performed over thousand concerts in over fifty
countries, and released five internationally acclaimed and awarded
albums. In addition to the traditional Romani and Balkan influences
they fuse elements of international pop, flamenco and Bollywood into
their fast paced music. The band themselves cheekily define their
music as Balkan Funk. Known for their frantic performances the band
never plays their music from note sheets. They skillfully improvise
their songs into fresh new forms in each and every one of their
concerts.

Boban & Marko Markovic

The Boban & Marko Markovic Orchestra has been the leading Balkan Brass
band in Serbia over the last 17 years. The band based on brass and
percussion's is led by Boban Markovic, the man often crowned as the
best trumpet player of the Balkans. They perform a fresh take on
traditional Balkan music, and they have already released nine albums.
The band's music is also well known from the soundtracks of several
Balkan films, the most famous of them being the awarded "Underground"
by Emir Kusturica.

The other Markovic in the band's name is Boban's son Marko, who joined
his father's group in the age of 14. Before joining he had been
practising for up to 10 hours a day, the rumour says. The band has
been warded several times, and they are immensely popular in both the
Balkans and the rest of the world. They regularly perform at the
world's biggest festivals for tens of thousands of people, and in the
Hungarian festival of Sziget even Oasis had to re-schedule their
performance as the festival's ecstatic audience would not leave the
stage after the performance of Boban & Marko Markovic.

In addition to the live bands the event will host a performance of DJ
Robert Soko, the founder of the Berlin based Club "Balkan Beats". Soko
and his Brand are considered to be some of the biggest forces behind
the recent huge international success of Balkan music.

The domestic cream is represented by Bad Ass Brass Band and the Balkan
Fever Club DJ's Borzin and Levy. Plus Serbian Born Vladimir Kekez on
Darbuka.

Shazalakazoo Making electronic music since 1998; performing it live since 2000.
A band from Belgrade (Serbia) formed by Milan Djurić (usb-clarinet,
plastic knobs, faders, rubber pads, silicon chips, singing and
shouting) and Uroš Petković (electric violin, turntablism and silicon
chips). The band plays danceable electronic bass music spiced with the
sounds originating from their own region - the Balkans. Their
interpretation of Balkan melodies, harmonies and rhythm patterns are
often intertwined with the influences that come mostly from Latin
America and Sub-Saharan Africa, creating the unique musical blend
which they call folkstep.

The band performed in Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro,
Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy,
Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Russia, Denmark,
Sweden, Norway, Finland, Slovakia and Poland so far.
They have two albums - Speaking Balkanian (2010) and The New album
BANG! BANG! is aiming to be released in October 2011 for Berlin`s
EASTBLOK MUSIC Label.
Their compositions and remixes appear on various compilations or other
artist`s releases.

Yhdelle juttu alkoi homeenhajuisessa kellariklubissa Berliinissä. Toiselle rovaniemeläisen kirpparin levylaarin äärellä. Kolmas kuulee jonkun pohjoismaisen kansanmusafestivaalin loputtomilla parkkipaikkajatkoilla Boban Markovicia. Kiinnostuksen kipinä jää kaikilla kytemään.Serefen kolmesta ydinjäsenestä Jaakko Laitisen kipinä roihahtaa liekkiin ensimmäisenä ja siitä syntyvät ensin lyhytikäiseksi jäänyt Orkestar Business Class ja myöhemmin suurempaa mainetta niittänyt Jaakko Laitinen&Väärä Raha.

Arttu Tolosen ja Teemu Korpipään kohdalla homma jäi tuliselle diggailuasteelle eikä tie vienyt balkanilaisia vaikutteita hyödyntäviin projekteihin moneen vuoteen. Sitten tuli Serefe Sound System, joka sai alkunsa Artun haastatellessa Jaakkoa lehteen. Bändissä yhdistyvät Teemun konevääntö Artun kielisoittimiin ja sämpleihin sekä Jaakon dramaattiseen laulantaan. Vuosikymmenet väliltä 1950-2010 lyövät kättä iskelmämelodioiden ja filosofisten tulkintojen lentäessä pulputtavien acid-riffien päällä busukin soittaessa valkoisen miehen bluesia. DJ-setin ja konsertin raja hämärtyy rock-poliiseja ärsyttävällä tavalla. 

Hiki lentää, mutta onneksi on kravatti kaulassa, johon sitä pyyhkiä.

Dj Emils Bio :
He is a versatile DJ with a keen interest in music from all around

the world. He has a background in musicology and apart from producing music and DJing, Emil lectures on popular music history. Emil also runs the Maasto Records imprint, which latest releases include the Baltik bass vol. 1 EP. This release features new electronic club music based on the folk music from the Baltic sea region - defined as a sister genre to Balkan beat. Emil has outside of Finland performed in places like Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia and, together with the Boom Shakalaka DJ collective, he hosts a world music Radio show on Basso radio.

Shantel began his DJ career in Frankfurt, Germany, and was inspired by the audience reaction to gypsy brass bands such as Fanfare Ciocărlia and trumpeter Boban Marković to infuse electronically-tweaked Balkan gypsy music into his DJ set. Shantel released two compilations of his popular DJ night, Bucovina Club, on his own Essay label, which won the Club Global award in the 2006 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music. He was one of several DJs to remix recordings of Taraf de Haïdouks and Kočani Orkestar on the Electric Gypsyland compilations from Belgium's Crammed Discs label, and released his next album on that label. He gained popularity in Turkey after recorded clip of 'Disko Partizani' in Istanbul.Shantel's 2007 album Disko Partizani departed somewhat from the techno sound of Bucovina Club, concentrating more on the music's Balkanroots.

On August 28th 2009 he released his new album with the name "Planet Paprika".Since then he has been touring in Sold out Venues all over the Planet Paprika.In the Summer of 2010 he played at the Huvila Tent in front of crowd of 1000. His last November Helsinki show @ Club Balkan Fever in Le Bonk was as always a Crazy Disko Partizani Show .
